A recent survey we conducted among 40-50 year olds revealed that more than 70% of them want happiness and peace in life. About 50% of them said they find financial constraints and career growth as primary reason for not being happy. If that is the case people with fantastic careers and loads of money should be happy. However, that is also not true. Many of them have come out and said how they are unhappy about life.
So that brings me to the question of what is happiness and peace and how do you be happy. We all travel this journey of life to find out the answer to this question. However, the most important journey is the inner journey, the one we undertake to find out the truth, who am I?
The way we see happiness today is more like an if-then-else statements. If I have money I am happy. If I have a good job I am happy, if I am successful I am happy. The challenge with this is we are looking at happiness as a quality of some external aspect, some goal to achieve and who is to say what success is. The moment we achieve the current goal we set a new goal and we now start the cycle all over again. It sounds then that happiness is like a moving goal post. You are almost there but never there.
Decide on the journey you want to undertake. What is the road you want to travel? There are multiple bags you are carrying with you in this journey:- Relationships, Career, Health, Spirituality, Personal, Parenting, Society. You cannot afford to drop any of these bags and neither can you afford to have one overloaded bag at the expense of other bags.
Life is all about balance. You need to have some sort of balance across all areas of your life. There is a time for work, time for play, time for family and most importantly time for self. If these do not coexist then there is an imbalance which leads to frustration and anxieties.
Start asking yourself this question of what is happiness to you and what is success to you. Whatever your definition of success and happiness is never allow that definition to take control of you. It is about time to bring in some priority. Prioritize your life and never do anything that will make you move away from this priority. It is time that you ask yourself why you are doing what you are doing. Fulfilment comes because you are being true to yourself not because of anything else.
You are the architect of your life and for you to build a life that you enjoy you have to start with a blueprint. You are the blueprint, your inner design. Start by understanding this blueprint and make the rest of your journey worthwhile for you.
