Seeing the World Through Their Eyes
Empathy is the ability to understand or feel what someone else is experiencing — to step into their shoes. It’s one of the most important qualities in communication.
Today, this quality often seems missing, whether in social groups or even at home between parents and children.
Children, especially adolescents, often say things like:
- “My mother won’t let me go to my friend’s party.”
- “My parents don’t even try to understand my feelings.”
- “They shout at me too often.”
Why don’t parents empathize more? Often, it’s because they believe their decisions are always right. But children need to be recognized for who they really are, not molded to meet expectations. Too many expectations create anxiety for the child and frustration for the parent — and that isn’t healthy.
Instead of immediately saying no or imposing limits, parents can pause and imagine what they would feel in their child’s place. This simple shift helps them make choices without hurting the child. Patience, gentle questions, and a calm presence go a long way — especially with adolescents.
It may feel scary, but letting children fail and learn from mistakes is how they discover themselves. Many parents inadvertently live through their children, projecting unfulfilled dreams or ambitions.
Allowing kids to explore and discover what they truly enjoy helps them develop confidence and self-awareness. Clear, patient communication ensures children feel heard and understood. Every child deserves the right to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment.
